Employment

Integration - Employment roundtable

A very important aspect of the Common Basic Principles on Integration of migrants agreed by the European Union in 2004 is employment. For the RIS, a significant number of our clients find it difficult to access employment especially in their chosen professions. We have clients with backgrounds in Accounting, Banking and Finance, Law, Information Technology, Nursing, Engineering etc. The RIS feels strongly that it is mutually beneficial between the State and the individual migrant to be in employment. This would consequently reduce the burden on the State of social welfare provisions and the individual is then properly integrated.

In furtherance of this objective, the RIS implemented a number of inititaives aimed at facilitating employment for our clients groups. One of such initiative is the employment roundtable which brought professional migrants, employers and policy makers together to deliberate on the issue of employing migrants. The workshops also served as shared forum between migrants and employers to get to interact and know more about one another.

Two workshops have been hosted to date in Dublin and Galway.

In April 2008 the RIS hosted an Employment Roundtable in the Royal College of Physicians in Dublin. It was facilitated by Peter Kruseman of WinstonKruseman Creative Strategists and was attended by both Employers and Migrant Workers alike. The Roundtable dealt with many issues, including the differing perspectives from migrants and employers and through the use of creative exerices led to the development for best thinking.

On the 18th September 2008, the RIS hosted an Employment Roundtable in the Harbour Hotel in Galway. The event was attended by various employers in the Galway region. The roundtable provided a unique opportunity for the RIS to bring together, employers, professional migrants and policy makers to seek solutions to potential barriers to employment, including 'no Irish experience'.

These workshops were well attended and reports have been completed for circulation to all stakeholders. If you would like to view the Dublin report click here. If you would like to see the Galway report click here.
